Lubaantun Maya Ruin

LUBAANTUN - PLACE OF FALLEN STONES

 

Labaantun is situated at the foot of the Maya Mountain about 11/2 miles from the village

of  San Pedro Columbia in the Southern district of Toledo. It's the largest site in southern

Belize and consist of 11 structures 5 main plaza and 3 ball court.

Lubaantun Maya RuinWhat makes Lubaantun unique is all the structures are made from black stone slate and not limestone the blocks are laid with no mortar but instead each stone is hand cut to fit like a puzzle next to each other. The structures all have rounded corners and are solid with no doorways, perishable buildings was on top of these huge pyramid where ceremonies where held.

 

Lubaantun was once an important commercial and ceremonial center where occasional festivals, ball games and sacred ceremonies where held.

Although no stele was found here at Lubaantun the site is well known for its ceramic figurine which can still be found at the site today.

The world most famous quartz crystal skull so called "Skull of Doom" was allegedly found here by the daughter of archaeologist explorer Fredrick Mitchell Hedges in 1924.

It's a perfectly 8 inch shaped human skull carved from quartz crystal. The origin of the skull remains a mystery.

Travel Tip - Entry Requirements

When visiting Belize, you must have a valid passport, along with proof of return. No visas are required from the United States, United Kingdom, and Caribbean countries. Most other countries requires visa. Check with your travel representative. Visitors are allowed a month visit without requesting an extension.
