Belize Watch 1

On Belize Watch today we visited the village of San Estevan in the Orange Walk district. San Estevan is located six miles northeast of Orange Walk Town along the bank of the New River. the Mayas were the first people to inhabit the village, followed by woodcutters and later by Mestizo fleeing from the "Guerra De La Castas War or The War of Races" in Yucatan , from that time on San Estevan has been a Mestizo village.

How San Estevan got its name?

It is believed that some woodcutters who had settled in there came across a statue at the trunk of a coconut tree in the marsh somewhere along the bank of the New River. The statue measured five feet in length and was identified as being the image of Saint Steven. (San Estevan in spanish)
